TRANSITION YEAR Basketball JUNIOR Coaching Course Overview

online sessions, practical sessions & Workshops
5 week intensive course

5 x Hours Coaching Development Tutorials
5 hours of online coaching lessons. Students will be required access to a work out space to dribble, shoot and move. Topics include the fundamentals of basketball skills, drill breakdowns and coaching techniques.
5 x Hours Training Mentorship
Students will do online training in various topics related to delivering and administrating a sports programme. Students learn the requirements needed to become a registered coach including safeguarding for children and Garda-Vetting. Topics cover sports psychology, sports and business administration.
5 x Half Day Practical Workshops
Students participate in 5 half day workshops . During these session we will cover the practical elements of designing a session, progression sessions and how to teach the core Shooters Academy and Little Baller Programmes.
10 x Hours Guided Work Experience
Students will be prepped and guided for work experience. They will shadow and deliver coaching under one of our lead coaches. Each hour of work experience will be administered with a set task. Those unable to attend onsite work experience will be asked to deliver their task in one of our online sessions.
30 x Hours towards Gaisce Award
These sessions can be used towards the Bronze Gaisce Award as you will complete over 30 hours learning a new skill. It can be broken down into 10 weeks learning a skill and 10 hours of work experience spread across 3 another weeks.
1x Personal 1 to 1 Coaching Session
Each student will be allocated a personal 1 to 1 session with our Head Coach. They will work together to devise and plan a session to be assessed on for a specific group of players. Feedback will be provided after the assessment.
1x End of Year Tournament
Students will plan, organise, promote and deliver a tournament at the end of the course. They will have opportunity to put into practice all they have learned during the course affording them the opportunity to excel in their career as a Junior Coach.

Gillian has a BSc. in Sport & Exercise Science from the University of Limerick. Her wealth of experience lies in teaching in Further Education as a  Youthreach Teacher for 12 years with early school leavers. She is a registerd member of the Teaching Council.  Her speciality subjects are Health Related Fitness, Work Experience and SPHE. While in her role in Youthreach Gillian worked as a Coordinator for 2 years managing a staff team of 19.  Currently alongside running Hoop Skool Basketball she is the Head Girls Basketball Coach at St Andrews College Booterstown where she has led her teams to multiple All- Ireland accolades. 

Her goal is to find the spark in every child and through her work she believes it can be found. Her chosen medium is through basketball, by educating young people to become more confident people and contributors to society. Gillian does this already in her highly successful Hoop Skool Basketball Player Development programme she now wants to pass her knowledge on to new coaches willing to learn and apply themselves to help others.

Gillian is looking for 8 applicants to apply for this course with the view of developing them as coaches, whereby they then use their skillset to move forward on this career path. You must have a fire in your belly and passion in your heart for learning and growth. 

at the end of the 5 weeks you will deliver an event for basketball players which will be organised and ran solely by you...coach.
